Milky Chance: How a Bedroom Recording from Kassel Became a Global Folk Phenomenon

Milky Chance, the German folk-alternative duo from Kassel, built one of the most durable indie crossover careers of their generation on the back of a single bedroom recording. Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch — a guitarist-vocalist and a DJ-producer who met in a high school music course — uploaded “Stolen Dance” to SoundCloud in 2013 with essentially no promotional apparatus behind it. The song proceeded to top the charts in Austria, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary. What followed was not a fluke trajectory corrected by industry machinery, but a sustained twelve-year run that has produced four studio albums, a catalog of global singles certifications, and a fan base that spans continents. Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch first met in an advanced music course while in high school in Kassel, Germany, where Rehbein played bass in the jazz ensemble.
Dausch was already working as a DJ.
Originally they played together in a local band, but after graduation the group broke up and the two continued as a duo.
The Kassel milieu matters here: not Berlin’s self-consciously cosmopolitan club scene, not Hamburg’s port-city swagger, but a mid-sized Hessian city with no pre-existing indie infrastructure to lean on. That geographic remove, it turns out, is built directly into the music’s texture.

After playing just two live shows, the band recorded their debut album in a home-made studio in Rehbein’s childhood home, releasing several singles on SoundCloud and YouTube before the record was finished.

The band has said it took them three years to write “Stolen Dance.”
That extended gestation explains something critics sometimes missed at the time of release: the song does not behave like an impulse upload. Its structure — a rolling, mid-tempo 4/4 groove anchored by Dausch’s sidechain-compressed kick pattern, Rehbein’s open-tuned acoustic strum, and a bass-forward low-end mix that owes more to dub than to contemporary folk — is too considered for accident. The tonal center sits in a slightly ambiguous zone that keeps the ear leaning forward without ever resolving into conventional pop finality.

Their first single was released in April 2013, topping the charts in several countries, and won the 1Live Krone radio award for Best Single.

It reached number one in Austria, France, Belgium (Wallonia), Ireland, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary.
The American crossover came later but proved equally durable:
it hit number one on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and is certified five-times Platinum by the RIAA.

By May 2025, the “Stolen Dance” video had reached one billion views on YouTube.

The sonic signature they established on that first single has remained, in modified forms, their working formula: Rehbein’s warm baritone placed mid-register against a rhythm architecture that carries as much reggae pulse as folk-acoustic sensibility, with Dausch’s production providing density without burying the room ambience. It is not a polished studio aesthetic. That was the point from the beginning, and it has remained their most defensible creative choice across a decade of releases.

Discography Highlights: The Albums That Defined and Tested the Formula

Sadnecessary, their debut studio album, was released on 31 May 2013 on Lichtdicht Records, with Rehbein and Dausch credited as co-producers across its 55-minute runtime.

The album peaked at number 14 in Germany and charted at number 17 on the Billboard 200.
Beyond the lead single, the album held up on deeper investigation: “Flashed Junk Mind” traded the loping groove of “Stolen Dance” for a slightly more compressed, rhythmically aggressive structure, while “Fairytale” opened with Rehbein in a sparser register that exposed his melodic instincts without Dausch’s electronic scaffolding.
Sadnecessary was certified Gold by the RIAA, BVMI, ARIA, SNEP, and IFPI Austria.

The album was also nominated for the IMPALA European Independent Album of the Year award.

The pair returned to the studio following extensive touring to record their sophomore album; the resulting Blossom, released in early 2017, saw the duo pushing their sound in new directions.

Blossom incorporated new elements such as horns and strings while maintaining their signature sound.

It reached number five in Germany, number seven on the US Top Alternative Albums chart, and number ten on US Top Rock Albums.
The scale of the production jump was real — Blossom sounds like a band that had spent two years in rooms with professional engineers and had absorbed some of it, for better and for mixed results. The arrangements are denser, the mix wider, but occasionally at the cost of the rough-edged spontaneity that made the debut feel like something discovered rather than constructed.

A third full-length, Mind the Moon, arrived in November 2019 and included the single “Daydreaming” featuring Tash Sultana.
The Sultana collaboration was shrewder than it first appeared: both artists work in a space where folk production values meet loop-based electronic layering, and the single’s rhythmic vocabulary — complex polyrhythm beneath a deceptively simple hook — suited both performers.
Their fourth full-length, Living in a Haze, arrived in June 2023, reaching number 16 in Germany, and featured guest appearances from Fatoumata Diawara on the Afrobeat-infused “Flicker in the Dark” and Charlotte Cardin on “History of Yesterday.”
In 2025, the duo continued their catalog expansion with the release of Gems In Paradise, available now in the Get Music catalog.
Also in 2025, they delivered Trip Tape III, featuring the single “Camouflage.”
